If we are to save our native red squirrel then we need YOU! By setting up a red squirrel group in your area, you can raise awareness and join forces with other like-minded people to stop the grey squirrel getting a foothold in your area. The RSPP can support you. Check out the Ponteland Red Squirrel Website www.pontelandredsquirrels.co.uk and if you're interested in creating a similar group (under the 'umbrella' and support of the RSPP) please contact Sally - email sally@rspp.org.uk or pontelandsos@fsmail.net THANK YOU

I'm looking into setting up a group in Sussex (possibly East Sussex to start with so as not to set the sights too high initially).
Our aim will be to eradicate the greys in the County, and then over time, re-introduce the reds. I know that is asking a lot, but if we had groups set up in every county in England and Wales (And Scotland!), we could make some headway on this.
My dream is to work Northwards, and by about 2018 meet the Northumberland group somewhere in the Midlands. I'm sure it'll take longer than though. They greys have had over 100 years headstart.
My question is, although we're based down South, can we (or do we?) come under the RSPP umbrella ?
Its harder for us down here as many people have no recollection of the Reds ever existing. A lot of people do find the Greys a pest though, or at worst are indifferent to them. |

I live in East Sussex as well and am doing my bit by getting rid of as many greys as I can. I'm sure the songbird population round our garden has increased since I started trapping the greys. I often loan the trap to one of my neighbours and she takes out a good few as well.
What do people think is the best way of killing the squirrels once trapped? I don't have an airgun. |

thank you, thats very helpful. i think an airgun could be a useful purchase for me, particularly as it could take out a few wood pigeons as well.
